I started the RMA process for my new camera tonight. I took it to work with me today to take pics of the Blue Angels practice run after work. I noticed that some of the pics have some visible dust spots. I have not had the camera long enough for it to have dust on the sensor. It had to have been there when it left the factory. So I’m exchanging it.
I took some comparison pics with my digital rebel and the dust on that sensor is not as bad as the dust on the sensor of my new camera. I can go all the way to about f18ish with the drebel, and I can’t even stop down past f10 on the 30d without seeing the dust. Granted, I don’t take lots of pictures of the sky, but that’s not the point. There’s no reason for the dust to be there. I took it out of the box, very carefully put the lens on, and haven’t taken it off since. My drebel has had 4 different lenses on it, and they’ve been changed more times than I can count.
Here are some comparison pics taken this evening at f36 with each camera. I’ve taken a 100% crop of each affected area, and a resized version of the same pics at 1024xwhatever.

So there’s the evidence. I still got a few pretty good pictures. I really wish I had a super zoom lens for this kind of thing, but it doesn’t happen often enough to spend the money on a decent one. I have a 70-300mm but it doesn’t focus very quickly and it’s not very good quality.
I just lost my internet connection and lost half of the post. Here’s the summary: I got some pretty cool pics today. A couple might even make good computer wallpaper. It was almost as cool as refueling the Thunderbirds a couple of years ago… So many good pics to choose from…
