Shutdown Day
March 23rd, 2007
Tomorrow is “Shutdown Day.” 2 dudes got together and decided to see how many people would voluntarily go without their computer for a whole day. If you go to the site you can “pledge” either way. Right now about 54,000 people have said they can go without their computer for an entire day, and 8,500 have said they cannot. At least they picked a weekend day. It would be impossible to not use my computer at work.
I’ve been doing this for a few years now. I’ll pick a random day and won’t use my cell phone, email, or computer that day. Actually, I may use the computer, but I don’t use the internet or any electronic communication device, and certainly not myspace. I’ve bet many people that they couldn’t go without logging into myspace for 2 days in a row and only one has been able to complete the challenge. I can do the no computer thing tomorrow with no problem if it’s not raining. I’m going to be riding my bike and going to the hockey game anyway, so I doubt I’ll even be home that much.
Not using the computer for a day is not an easy thing to do. You don’t realize how many things you use your computer for until you’re without it. If my computer(s) died all of a sudden I’d have to find another way to look up phone numbers, check movie times, or find directions somewhere. I also wouldn’t be able to play GTA: San Andreas, which is about all I’ve done on the computer recently anyway. I have been taking my 7:17 pictures every day (for almost 3 months now), but I’m about 3 or 4 days behind on posting them. Guess I’ll have to do it today since I can’t do it tomorrow. It’s going to make for a weird morning not reading the news while having my coffee.
So, who thinks they can do this? Anyone up for the challenge?
