Another Field Trip
January 24th, 2007
Hello again,
today i put another field trip under my belt with a visit to a christian monastery built between 400 and 500 AD. The history lesson I received is something like this. This church was built before islam had even made it to this part of the world. The outside is marked with a carved cross by the main entrance to note that this building is friendly to christians. Inside the entryway is a another cross beleived to have been carved sometime during the crusades. It is not too big only a couple of inches long and wide (see picture).
Early in the war the iraqi was using this building as a command post and had a tank parked outside. Well an anti tank rocket took out the tank and the resulting blast did some damage to the outside wall. Inside the church there are ancient pottery debris along with modern warfighting remnants. There is not much else to this old building that I was told, but if you would like a history lesson on where i am, read Genesis ch 10, Jonah, and refer to ninnevah. since i am in the ninnewah province (note spelling change).
