I’m Going to Live!
September 13th, 2006
I went over for a “Cardiac Risk Profile” earlier. Basically they didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. I’m alive, and that’s about all they can say with any certainty. Just kidding. I’m in good health, but I need to work on a few things. Here’s the breakdown:
| Total Cholesterol | 135 |
| LDL | 85 |
| HDL | 17 |
| Triglycerides | 164 |
| CHOL/HDL Ratio | 8.0 |
| Blood Pressure | 114/74 |
| Glucose | 87 |
So what exactly does that mean? Beats the hell out of me. Just kidding. Basically everything is good/great, except my HDL is low and my Triglycerides are high. Here’s what’s supposedly normal:
- Total cholesterol - Less than 200
- LDL - Less than 100
- HDL - Greater than 60
- Triglycerides - Less than 150
- CHOL/HDL Ratio - Less than 5.0
- Blood Pressure - Less than 119/ Less than 79
- Glucose (blood sugar) - Less than 99
So, my HDL is super low. The lady recommended that I get some Omega3 fish oil capsules (1000mg/day) to help my HDL levels. That will most likely also lower my Triglycerides, but I also have to cut back on the processed foods and anything that’s hydrogenated, which I already knew as well. Higher HDL will supposedly also lower my LDL, but it’s already at a good level. I was told that it’s pretty difficult to get it down below 85. Once I get my HDL higher it’ll make that CHOL/HDL ratio a LOT closer to normal.
My BMI is 28, but that doesn’t really mean shit to me. It’s not based on body fat percentage, it’s just based on weight and height. A body builder with 3% body fat could have a BMI of 28, but that doens’t mean he or she is unhealthy or “fat.” So I think that one’s bullshit and doesn’t really matter. However, I was glad to see my weight is still below 230.
So in short, I shouldn’t die of natural causes anytime soon. There wasn’t much of a question about that happening anyway, but it’s good to have it affirmed. The numbers are bueno.
