Over the Weekend
August 18th, 2006
Hey, what’s everybody doing over the weekend? I hate this phrase. “Over the weekend” should be banned from usage forever. That is, until such a time as it’s possible for a person to physically be over an entity called the weekend.
If your girlfriend’s (or hooker’s) nickname is “The Weekend,” that could work. “Hey, what did you do over your hooker?” Response: “Any number of things that are too inappropriate to mention above a whisper.” That is the only way this phrase is possible.
This has bugged me for quite some time, and I just read it on CNN, so that makes it even worse. I quote:
The swap-out will take place over the weekend while Atlantis is on the launch pad in preparation for an August 27 liftoff.
Unless you’ve nicknamed the launchpad “the weekend,” you’re an idiot. The swap-out WILL take place over the launchpad, as the shuttle is sitting vertical and they need a ladder to reach it. I’d like to suggest some alternatives.
- The swap-out will take place THIS weekend
- The swap-out will take place DURING the weekend
- The swap-out will take place UNDER the weekend (just kidding)
“The Weekend” is a time period, right? Example 1 works because it specifies a particular time period. Example 2 works, but it’s really not a lot better than OVER the weekend. It’s almost like saying “My birthday is DURING next Sunday.”
Here’s what dictionary.com says:
week·end
n.The end of the week, especially the period from Friday evening through Sunday evening.intr.v. week·end·ed, week·end·ing, week·ends
To spend weekends or a weekend.
I totally forgot about Weekend also being a verb. You can’t be over(above) a time period and you sure as hell can’t be over a verb! You can, however, be somewhere over the rainbow
I would love to continue this useless post but it’s 3:50 and time to go home. I know, can you believe it? I worked the whole week AND all day today. Yay me. I’m going to have to reward myself over the weekend. hah!
