Gigabit = The Shit
October 29th, 2005
I just got my gigabit switch and gigabit NICs and installed them. This shit is SO fast. I took the liberty of doing a benchmark to see just how much faster it is. Theoretically gigabit is 10 times faster than a 100base network. It’s a jump from 100 mbps to 1000 mbps, theoretically. While i upgraded the hardware i did not upgrade my network patches to cat5E or cat6. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it, and i don’t really care. there’s a lot more to it than that, and i’m not going to go into it.
the fact is my network is 3 times faster than it was, and that’s a substantial increase, especially considering that i have a bunch of files to sort and copy across the network. i took the liberty of screenshotting the results that SiSoft Sandra reported. the thumbnails are below. i know you’re jealous, go ahead and admit it to yourself.
the before screenshot is on the left and the after screenshot is on the right:

cat5 is rated at 1000MB and cat5e is rated the same it just tranfers @ 350MHz…why do i know this?

my switch doesn’t support jumbo frames anyway, so it doesn’t really matter.
you know this because you’re also a geek. say it loud, say it proud!
