Blackberry v4.0

October 13th, 2005

This morning I updated my blackberry OS to version 4.0. This has given me something to play around with all day since it’s not so busy. I must say that I am pleased with the new operating system. Now I can open images attached in emails, and save them to the blackberry if I want. I was always able to view images via the web, but never email attachments.

There are already a bunch of free applications out there for this new OS. BBWeather is a program that automatically retrieves the weather based on the info you provide. You no longer have to go to weather.com and type in your zip code. One click and it’s done. I don’t have a screenshot, but it give you the UV index, wind, dew point, humidity, barometric pressure, visibility, sunrise and sunset, phase of the moon, and of course temperature and heat index. You can also switch to the forecast for the number of days that you specify.

There’s instant messenger for the blackberry. It’s aight I guess. I don’t know who needs to be THAT connected, but you already know that I’ll use it from time to time.

Picture manager is included with the OS, and you can set a picture as your background, kind of like a desktop wallpaper. You can also assign a different picture to your “lock” screen. I haven’t done a lot with this yet, other than just mess around with it.

There’s a new version of brickbreaker. Ok great, but what happened to my high score from the old version? It’s gone, never to be seen again. I’ll have to make a new one.

Contacts are now synchronized wirelessly. The only thing that syncs when you plug it in is the email, and even that could be done wirelessly if you set it up that way. I don’t prefer that because I like to clear the blackberry out every once in a while.

The only bad things so far were: having to redo all my settings (fonts etc…), and having to reinstall 3rd party software, like the telnet client and tumbler, a kick ass little game. Other than that it’s a pretty nice little upgrade. I haven’t gotten to play around with it as much as I’d like to, but I’m sure I’ll have time tomorrow since Fridays are usually low productivity days.
