Up Up and Away
September 17th, 2004
in my beautiful balloon. this weekend is the forest park balloon race. i think i’m going to try and make it out there on saturday for the photo opportunity. if i’m lucky, maybe i’ll hitch a ride. i pose this question. how can there be a balloon pilot? it’s not like they can steer. they go wherever the wind takes them. i don’t consider that a pilot. how about “balloon elevator,” or something like that? i think that works better.

I thought they steered the balloons with the weighted bags. I would still not classify it as piloting though more like balloon guiders!

Or balloon flyers.

i, too, thought it odd that those guys are called pilots. however, they do have to get a license from the FAA and have flight rules governing them. they get clearance over planes because they are less maneuverable. end of lesson.

They totally steer! It’s really amazing how much control they have… they know the wind currents and the elevations they need to be to go in those directions… and they of course can go up and down whenever they need to. At our festival they also have a handful of balloons with pilots that are licensed to fly in the dark, which is awesome… they glow!

thanks, aaron! just thought i’d spread the knowledge the air force forced upon me and paid for. the flight lessons were fun, and it’s nice party conversation… if you’re a tool.
